Why would a candidate want to join your company?

During a recruitment career that is deep into its third decade now, I have had the pleasure to speak to many candidates about what they want from their next career move. This can span from development opportunity, career progression, salary uplift, or relocation through to just feeling wanted by their new employer. As an employer, it is important to understand what your companies key selling points are and how to make sure you are highlighting these through the attraction and interview process.
A candidate might want to join a company for several reasons, depending on the values, culture, and opportunities the company provides. Here are some common factors that can make a company attractive to potential candidates:

  • Growth and Development Opportunities: If the company offers robust training, mentorship, and career development programs, candidates will see opportunities for advancement and learning.

  • Company Culture: A positive, inclusive, and collaborative work environment is a huge draw. Candidates often look for organisations where they feel they can thrive, both professionally and personally.

  • Innovative and Challenging Work: Companies that are at the forefront of innovation or solving interesting problems can attract candidates who are passionate about making an impact and working on meaningful projects.

  • Work-Life Balance: A company that promotes work-life balance, with flexible hours, remote working options, or wellness programs, is appealing to candidates who prioritize their overall well-being.

  • Compensation and Benefits: Competitive salaries, health benefits, retirement plans, and other perks are often a key consideration for candidates deciding between job offers.

  • Company Reputation and Stability: Candidates are attracted to companies with a solid reputation in their industry, as well as stability in terms of long-term growth and vision.

  • Social Responsibility and Values Alignment: Many candidates, especially younger ones, are drawn to companies that have strong corporate social responsibility programs and a commitment to sustainability, diversity, and community involvement.

  • Leadership and Vision: Strong, inspiring leadership and a clear company vision can instil confidence in potential employees that they will be part of something meaningful and successful.

For your specific company, you could emphasise some of these factors based on what makes your organisation unique. Working in partnership with a recruitment company such as Cirrus Selection, will allow you to have a joined up recruitment message that can be proactively communicated to a candidate from the first conversation, even if they hadn’t considered your business originally.
